About Corsets

Are corsets comfortable to wear?

Yes. Our corsets are made with spiral steel boning which offer as much support as old fashioned whalebone but allow you to breath!  A corset is a very personal item and should be ‘broken in’ like a good pair of leather shoes. Your new corset will mould to your body and follow your curves making it more comfortable the more you wear it.

How do I put on a corset?

Although this is easier and fun if you have help, it can be managed by yourself. Firstly you need to loosen the laces at the back of the corset so that it wraps around the body easily. Then fasten the front busk, ensuring all clasps are fastened.

Once on (this bit is easier if standing with your back to a mirror) holding the lace loops in one hand, hook your thumb into the first X of the lacing at the top of your back and pull, this will tighten the corset. Continue down your back pulling each X until you reach your waist, give a good pull which will lengthen the ‘lace loops’ at your waist, that you are holding in your other hand. Repeat this process from the bottom of the corset back up to the waist.

You can repeat these steps until you are happy that the corset is tight but comfortable. Remember that a corset is designed to reduce the waist and emphasise an hourglass figure, so you don’t want to drastically reduce your ribcage or your hips. This will cause discomfort and may cause spillage.  When happy, tie the ‘lace loops’ together in a bow and you should have a wonderfully tight fitting corset.

Do not lace your corset too tightly during the first few weeks of wear. Just like a good pair of leather shoes, your corset should be ‘broken in’. The fabric must be allowed to take the strain evenly whilst the corset adjusts and moulds to your body shape.

To remove your corset:-

Always loosen the lacing at the back of your corset before trying to open the busk at center front otherwise this will cause undue stress and could snap the fastening.   To keep your corset fresh for it's next wearing, take a damp (NOT WET) cloth to the lining and brush off any surface body oils or perspiration that may have accumulated. Air out your corset in a cool open space and it will be ready to lace into next time you wish to look fabulous.

How should a corset be cared for?

The best method of cleaning your corset is to have it specially dry cleaned infrequently. This is the recommended method.

You can wash your corset by hand but you must be gentle. Lay it down flat in a bowl of warm water using mild soap flakes such as Dreft or Fairy. Gently submerge the corset and pat it into the water. Do not soak. Then rinse the corset in the same way by patting it into clean warm water.  Patting with a towel to absorb the excess water, then lay flat to dry, do not ring or squeeze the corset.

To keep your corset fresh between washes, when you remove your corset, take a damp (NOT WET) cloth to the lining and brush off any surface body oils or perspiration that may have accumulated. Air out your corset in a cool open space and it will be ready to lace into next time you wish to look fabulous.

Some people find that wearing a thin chemise or boob tube under your corset will help to reduce body odour and keep your corset fresher longer.

Are the suspenders detachable?

Suspenders are fully detachable and give versatility to your wonderful new corset.

Can I have extra suspenders added?

The standard is for 4 detachable suspenders to be included with your corset, if you would like more, please just let us know.

Sizing

Will a standard size corset fit me?

Our standard sized corsets should be ordered 2 – 4” smaller than your natural waist. This means that if you have a natural waist of 30” you would order either a 28” or 26” corset.

Our standard size overbust corsets are all made with a D cup  unless otherwise stated – if you have a smaller or larger cup size than D, you should select our ‘Made to Measure’ option.

Depending on the style of corset chosen, the bust and hip measurement will relate directly to the waist size selected.  Most styles are 10” bigger on the bust and hip than the corset waist but some styles do differ. The standard measurements are shown on each product page including the front length of the corset.

If you are unsure, whether a standard size or made to measure corset will be more suitable for you, please do get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.  Also see our size guide

Can I arrange to visit you and be measured?

We are an internet retailer and as such don’t have suitable premises to carry out personal fittings for our corsets. Our customers find that taking their measurements in their own home is much easier and more comfortable. Follow our sizing guides and follow our tips below:

·        Stand with your back to a mirror, so that you can check that the tape is sitting straight around your body and has no twists in it.

·        Take each measurement 3 times to ensure that they are the same. If they are very close but not exact, take an average of the 3. If they are different, please give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

I'm on a diet and expect to lose weight. Will my corset still fit me?

We always suggest that you order a corset 2 – 4” smaller than your natural waist size. This means that there will be a gap down center of your back where the lacing shows. This will also take into account possible weight fluctuations.  This will allow you to wear the corset a little more closed at the back as you start to lose weight. Any significant weight loss however, may mean that in time you need to treat yourself to a new corset!

I need a skirt to go with my corset can you make one?

We do not offer this service; however you can buy some extra fabric from us and have a local dressmaker make your skirt.

Do you have corsets for plus size ladies?

Absolutely, ladies of all sizes can feel fabulous in a Corsetcurves corset. Our corsets are designed to support, shape and fully sculpt the figure giving natural looking yet provocative curves. Our corsets go up to a 48" waist which will fit a natural waist of 54".

Can a corset help me look slimmer?

Corsets are designed to draw in the waist and flatten the tummy and therefore enhance any woman’s body, whether she is generously curvy or straight up and down. Corsets not only give a slimmer appearance but also enhance breasts and hips provocatively, giving the wearer a feeling of intense femininity and sensuality. First time corset wearers are usually surprised and delighted when they first see themselves in their new corset.

Can a corset improve my posture or relieve lower back pain?

A corset will certainly improve your posture, ensuring that you stand and sit straight, no slouching allowed (or even possible)! Corsets are designed to pull in the waist but they also have the benefit of modifying your figure, your carriage and movement. When wearing a corset your posture will be more upright and confident, your figure smoothed out, and your more restricted movement will appear more elegant.

As a result, a properly fitting corset will reduce the amount of pressure put on the lower back alleviating discomfort - although, we recommend, as in the case of any ongoing medical problems, that you consult your doctor regarding any back pain and the use of support garments before wearing a corset.

Can I have a corset made with my own fabric?

Yes, if you would like a corset custom made in your own fabric we would need to test a sample of it to ensure that the fabric is strong enough and suitable for making into a corset. If it is, we will provide a quote based on the fabric and your chosen style.
